Desktop or Cloud

By EF Cussins

cdsecurityWhen it comes to Cloud computing, one of the first questions I get asked is about how secure it is. Then I ask them the question about how secure is their desktop. Today, we are going to look which is more secure the Cloud or your computer desktop.

Stop and think about what it takes for basic security of your desktop computer. You have the firewall, then antivirus, along with an antispyware software. Now you got to keep it all those updates. Finally, if you get rerouted to a cloned website for your bank, there is identity theft.

In the world of Cloud computing the firewall, antivirus, and antispyware is all managed as part o your Software As A Service, SAAS. Teams of security specialist monitor the latest security threats. These teams keep up with the latest security threats and then apply patches and fixes to repel any threat.

I am not saying that Cloud Computing security is a replacement for desktop security. What I am saying that along basic desktop security the use of Cloud computing application add more protection to your data and the Cloud application that you use.

Elinor Mills in an article for Cnet.com, about Cloud computing security, wrote that Cloud computing can be as if not more secure as your standard desktop from the traditional office. She quotes Eran Feigenbaum, director of security for Google Apps. “Most organizations really struggle, whether they want to admit it or not, securing their networks.”

He points out that 34% data breaches that hit the headlines are the result of physically taking data through a laptop or memory stick. 16% amount for those employees who accidentally expose data on the Internet. Only 2.4 % of all breaches had encryption or other protection methods in place.
