Image Editing in the Cloud

By EF Cussins

I find there are three big hindrances when getting someone to start using a Cloud application. There are:

  1. Worry about data being safe and secure.wish-you-were-here
  2. Will that application be around in a year.
  3. The level of difficulty when it comes to learning that Cloud application.
  4. Will the Cloud application work in my favorite web browser.

What I did was take four recommended Cloud based image editing programs. I open my version of Google’s Chrome and started to edit a picture that I had on my desktop.

Adobe Photoshop Express - Adobe has always been know for its’ professional version of photoshop. I expected  the Cloud version of Express to be somewhat user friendly and functional. I found that neither was the case. It was both clunky and lacked some of the things I want in a image editor.

Avairy - Avairy is all still in beta, as if that does not mean anything. It does give you the option of working in layers were Photoshop Express does not.

Picnik - By far Picnik is the best online image editing program that I have found. The buttons are simple to find. Picnik even gives you a lot more options and edits that most programs that you have to install on your computer.

Pixlr - Pixlr is a more professional image editor. Some of the functions are a little hard to find if you do not know where they are, but for the serious image editor I would definitely recomemd Pixlr.

Sumo Paint - Sumo Paint seems to lack for I think is a important function. When you put text on an image, I found that I could not go back an change color or resize it.

Bottom-line: For easy of use and basic functionality I will go with Picnik. For the more serious graphic edition there is Pixlr. I was very disappointed in Adobe’s Photoshop Express. Considering how long it has been out even Avairy was a better program.
